Preparation

As a non-surgical and minimally invasive treatment, SkinPen does not require extensive preparation. However, there are some key guidelines to follow, which you will receive before your appointment. We recommend that patients stop drinking alcohol at least 24 hours before treatment. Nicotine use should be ceased far in advance for optimal results and smooth healing. Under the guidance of your provider, you may also be advised to discontinue the use of certain medications or supplements with blood-thinning properties. If you use any skincare products or regularly undergo any abrasive skin treatments that contain salicylic acid or retinoids, we recommend that you temporarily refrain from these practices. We recommend that patients stay hydrated and avoid excessive sun exposure before their procedure as well.

Treatment Process

On the day of your treatment, you should arrive with clean skin, without makeup and/or skincare products. We will cleanse your skin and apply a topical numbing cream. After you are comfortable, we will use the SkinPen device to make thousands of micropunctures in your skin per second. Depending on the condition of your skin and the concerns you are hoping to address, we may make multiple passes with the device. You may feel light pressure and a mild buzzing sensation while the device passes over your skin, but overall, the treatment is generally well-tolerated.

After Your Treatment

After your treatment, you may experience some temporary redness that is similar to the appearance of a mild sunburn. Some patients also experience dryness, tightness, and/or peeling skin, which should subside in 24-72 hours. We recommend that you avoid wearing makeup and refrain from swimming for approximately 72 hours to avoid irritating your skin. You should also avoid excessive sun exposure to protect your healing skin.
