About Skin Body Peels

Skin body peels are minimally invasive skin care treatments that use a chemical solution to refine skin health, appearance, and texture. Chemical peels create a controlled reaction on the skin’s surface, which stimulates collagen production, restoring a more youthful appearance and addressing more targeted concerns like acne, hyperpigmentation, visible signs of aging, and more.

Peel Strengths

Peels come in varying strengths to address different skin concerns and conditions. They are classified as light, medium, and deep, with each peel’s classification depending upon its depth of skin penetration.

  • Light Peels: Light peels address the outermost layers of skin. These peels are highly effective when addressing superficial concerns, such as acne and hyperpigmentation.
  • Medium Peels: Medium peels penetrate deeper into the skin to address more moderate skin concerns and conditions. Medium peels can address concerns such as hyperpigmentation, superficial acne scars, and shallow wrinkles.
  • Deep Peels: Deep chemical peels can correct more significant skin concerns, but also require a more extensive recovery. Deep peels can improve the appearance of more significant skin concerns, including severe acne scars or deep wrinkles. (3)

We offer two different types of peels to elevate the appearance and health of your skin. These include our VI Peel and our Sensitive Skin Peel.

VI Peel

The VI Peel is a physician-strength peel that can improve the tone, texture, and clarity of your skin. This peel is ideal when addressing age spots, freckles, and other pigmentation concerns, such as melasma, but it can also effectively soften and reduce rough texturing, acne scars, and early signs of aging.

Sensitive Skin Peel

The Sensitive Skin Peel is the peel we offer for patients who have more sensitive skin, are prone to redness, and consistently experience broken capillaries. This peel can improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation, facial scarring, fine lines, and your skin’s hydration. This treatment is considered a lunchtime peel, which means it is quick enough to allow you to return to each of your regular activities immediately after.

Personal Consultation

During your personal consultation, your specialist will meet with you to discuss the details of your treatment. They will explain the benefits and limitations of chemical peels, as well as the difference between our VI Peel and Sensitive Skin Peel. Your specialist will then ask you a series of questions about your medical history, skin concerns, and treatment goals. They will also perform a physical examination to assess the quality and condition of your skin.

Preparation

During your personal consultation, your specialist will give you a set of personalized instructions to help you prepare for your chemical peel. These instructions will vary depending on your lifestyle habits and the strength of your chosen peel, but following each one will help you enhance the outcomes of your treatment. Your specialist may direct you to:

  • Augment your skincare routine to avoid using harsh or acidic skin care products, such as retinols, retinoids, chemical peels, or exfoliants.
  • Avoid tanning or tanning products, as well as direct or excessive sun exposure overall.
  • Protect your skin by using sunscreen when leaving the house.
  • Keep your skin hydrated by wearing moisturizer and drinking plenty of water.
  • Arrive at your procedure with clean skin that is free from any makeup products, skin care residue, or facial jewelry.

Procedure

We perform each peel in our office. It will take approximately 30 to 90 minutes to complete your treatment. Your specialist can discuss our numbing options with you if you have more sensitive skin or a low pain tolerance.

At the beginning of your treatment, your specialist will cleanse your skin to remove any remaining residue. They will then apply either the VI Peel or Sensitive Skin Peel to the treated area, ensuring an even coating. You may feel a tingling or light burning sensation as it absorbs into the skin. (1) After leaving it on the skin for several minutes, your specialist will apply a neutralizing serum to stop the treatment and rinse your face. You will then be free to leave.

Recovery

After your chemical peel, you may experience some redness or sensitivity in the treated areas. These effects are temporary and will subside on their own shortly after. If you receive a medium or deep-strength peel, you may experience your skin whitening, also known as frosting. As your skin continues to heal itself, it may peel or flake. (3) This step means that the treatment is working and your skin is in the process of renewing itself. You must not pick or scratch at your skin, as doing so may cause irritation. Your specialist will provide you with additional instructions during your personal consultation to ensure you understand how to care for your skin as it heals.

Results

Once your skin heals, you will be able to experience the results of your chemical peel. You will be able to enjoy clearer, smoother, and brighter skin, as well as a more youthful-looking appearance. You may also experience refinements in your skin’s firmness and elasticity, especially if you received a medium or deep peel.

The results of our chemical peels can vary in duration depending on the depth of the peel. Along with a proper skin care routine, the results of lighter peels last for several months, and the results of deeper peels last for several years.

Our specialists can safely perform chemical peels on patients with darker skin tones. If you have any concerns, we recommend discussing them during your consultation.

How soon can I return to routine after my chemical peel?

If you receive a sensitive skin peel, you may return to your routine immediately after treatment. If you received a VI Peel, you may need to let your skin heal before returning to certain activities.

How will I know which chemical peel is right for me?

During your personal consultation, your specialist will assess the quality of your skin and discuss your concerns with you. They will then recommend the most appropriate peel for your concerns.

Will I be able to wear makeup after my chemical peel?

It is not advisable to wear any makeup for 24-48 hours after your peel, as your skin will still be healing during this time. Your specialist will provide you with a full set of instructions after your treatment, which will include when you may reintegrate certain products back into your routine.

Can my specialist combine my chemical peel with another skin rejuvenating treatment?

Your specialist may combine your treatment with another for more comprehensive results, but they may suggest waiting to undergo another treatment if you received a medium or deep-strength peel.
